The Story Behind the Name

The Sir Michael Stear Room takes its name from Air Chief Marshal Sir Michael Stear KCB CBE DL, a distinguished senior Royal Air Force commander whose personal history remains closely connected with Ploversfield.

When we bought Ploversfield, we purchased the house together with its contents. Among them was Sir Michael’s library and a collection of his personal material.

One particularly important item was the certificate associated with his knighthood, signed by Queen Elizabeth II. We subsequently returned this to Sir Michael’s son.

The connection continues in the room today, where a photograph of Sir Michael during an inspection by Queen Elizabeth II is displayed. It is a small reminder of the distinguished Royal Air Force career behind the room’s name.

Sir Michael rose to the rank of Air Chief Marshal and held a number of senior Royal Air Force and NATO appointments. He was appointed Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath in the 1990 New Year Honours.

Your Own Space at Ploversfield

Ploversfield is a large family home set within extensive private grounds, but the guest accommodation occupies its own separate part of the house, giving guests considerable privacy and space in which to relax.

Guests have their own comfortable lounge with a log burner and access to a private courtyard with a table and chairs. The owners have a separate lounge, so guests can enjoy their part of the house without sharing the family’s everyday living space.

With only three guest rooms, Ploversfield combines the space and privacy of a substantial country property with the personal welcome of a privately run Bed & Breakfast.

The indoor swimming pool and sauna are normally available during the warmer months. The pool is seasonally heated, and heating and availability vary according to the time of year.
